Acupuncture originated in China over 3,000 years ago. In the last 30 years modern acupuncture has developed with the application of electrical instruments to measure accurately the location of the acupuncture points (these points have a reduced electrical resistance compared with the surrounding skin area). Acupuncture works by 'tonifying' or 'sedating' the meridians, i.e. pathways of energy in the body. In healthy individuals these meridians possess a certain rhythm of circulating energy; in disease, scar tissue, other outside forces or emotions these rhythms of energy become disrupted. Acupuncture helps to restore these pathways of energy, reducing pain and inflammation, relieving stress, promoting healing and restoring function.
Caroline Eglinton qualified in Occupational Therapy at Dorset House School of Occupational Therapy Oxford. She worked for twenty years at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore where she was a Senior Occupational Therapist and latterly practised acupuncture. In 1986 she qualified as an Acupuncturist at the International Society of Biophysical Medicine in Liverpool where much emphasis was placed on pioneering advanced scientific techniques, new concepts in the fields of electro-acupuncture and the use of Kirlian photography. She has also qualified at the British College of Acupuncture where there is a traditional Chinese approach to diagnosis and treatment. Both training colleges accepts only medical and paramedical practitioners and a thorough knowledge of anatomy, physiology and western medicine is essential. She is a member of the British Acupuncture Council.
In March 1993 Caroline attended a post graduate course in traditional Chinese medicine at the Research Academy of Chinese Medicine in Beijing, China.
In 2006 and 2007 Caroline attended integrated acupunture seminars for fertility, which included accupunture in conjunction with I.V.F; where it has been shown to increase the success rate substancially. Much positive research is being carried out in these areas at present.
